Mountain Pastures in Wildschönau Tyrol

There are 46 alms in Wildschönau the highest is the Seefelder Alm at 1979 metres. The cows are brought up for the rich summer grazing while the grass is harvested at home to feed the livestock through the long winter. Butter and cheese is made up there in the summer months.

Some cowherds simply watch over the cattle and bring the milk down to the valley to be transported to the bigger dairies but others spend the whole summer with their families on the alm, a way of life which is hard and incomprehensible to most of us these days, often without TV, telephone or even electricity, but a peace that is heavenly. The Tyroleans wouldn't miss these months for anything on world.

Good reachable alms are for example:

Brixentaler Holzalm (Cheesealp)

From the mountain station of Markbachjochbahn you take a smal walk (about half an hour) over the accumulation lake you reach the Brixentaler Holzalm. Farmers make there cheese on olt traditional way and in summer they sell them directly with butter, milk and other self made products. At the morning you have even the possibility to have a look how they make the cheese in the Wildschöanu mountains.

Hintere Feldalm

From Holzalm Wildschönau the way takes you directly to a little chapelle Horler Stiege and further a steeply rising way to one of the most beautiful alps of the region the Vordere Feldalm. (ca. 200 meters high difference). Walkingtime about 1 hour.

Elsas Almausschank

From Feldalm the trail goes down to Elsa´s Almauschank "Kober" on 1250 m. The cosy alm invides you to stay and there you may try one of the excelent schnapps, jams as well as self made bread or bacon - even for take away. This alm you can even reach directly from Auffach!

Schönangeralm

About 1/2 hour from Elsas Almausschank away is the most famous pasture of Wildschönau the "Schönangeralm". At the famous cheese dairy you can see how "Cheeseking Johann" makes the famous and medaled Schönanger Almcheese.

Therefrom you have the possibility to start to a lot of different beautiful walks around this area.

At the near restaurant Alkeeper Fredy cook a lot of different Wildschönauer spesialities and by good weather the terrace there gives you one of the best panorama points of Wildschönau.

        Norderbergalm Niederau

From mountain station of Markbachjochalm the way takes you a walk from about 45 minutes to the lovely pasture Norderbergalm. Innkeeper Andrea is an wildschönauer original and will enthuse you with selfmade delicios meals. After the first schnapps you will feel as you are at home.
